OK, I couldn’t get a good shot, but that’s me wearing my glasses (I cropped out the rest of my face; you’re welcome). I woke up a few weeks ago with a ton of pain in my eye, took out my contacts, and have been wearing my glasses ever since. For almost two weeks. It sucks. And it’s not really an excuse for not blogging. But it’s better than just saying I’ve never gotten around to it, isn’t it?
So Mom is slowly recovering from her surgery. It’ll take a long time, but she’s getting stronger every day. She just needs to continue to rest and take it easy. And she still needs to listen to me, even though I never know what I’m talking about. And even if I’ve messed up a whole bunch of things over the last two weeks.
I’ve been cooking a lot, sometimes more successfully than others. One night, our friend Brendan (he’s a chef) gave everyone a night off from my food and made us a delicious dinner…which I photographed! Just like all the food blogs I read, except the photos aren’t nearly as good. First course was a spinach salad with strawberries and walnuts (which Miriam made, actually):

Brendan, my mom, and Miriam had this for their entree:

I don’t eat fish, so Brendan was kind enough to make me this delicious entree of puffed pastry filled with vegetables:

A second view:

And for dessert, Brendan made bread pudding with a Cointreau glaze (although I thought it tasted like lemons, not oranges):

If anyone wants to come make us dinner, please come on over. If you think you can compete with the meal above, that is. Presentation counts, too!
I almost forgot: I guess I could blame the lack of blogging on my having to work on Saturday night. In case you’re wondering how the new stimulus plan will affect you, you can order the booklet we worked on the other night. Nothing like being at the office on a Saturday night! It could’ve been worse, though; it could’ve ended up like this:

Sara, you are hilarious!! Keep up the writing.
Thank you to my babies for taking such good care of me. Thank you my friend Brendan for a delicious meal and great company. Thanks to all who sent donations to charity in my name and those who sent me wishes for a speedy recovery. Thanks for all the phone calls and offers of help.
Thanks alot to the person who brought me the cold germs – you know who you are.
I am feeling a little better everyday and hope to be back to “normal” soon.

Sara – I think you have found a new career – photographing food for cookbooks! Nice photos. Brendan did a great job (as I knew he would – he makes delicious food!).
P.S. I like your glasses!

Mama: How could I forget that Sam is an inconsiderate moron who came here when he was sick after his mother had surgery? Everyone, we have raging colds, thanks to my brother.
Lil: Thanks for your compliments all over the place! Although if you read the blogs I read, you’d see that my photos are horrible in comparison. Brendan is awesome. I hope he comes back soon.

Hope you’re back for good. How about some recipe sharing, yo?

Thanks for stopping by, X! The only recipe I have is for the spinach salad, which is great, but that all depends on what you’re looking for; if it’s bread pudding you want, salad won’t do it for you.

You worked on a weekend? Is that the first time ever? Because I managed to get through three years there and never worked on weekends. Much less Valentine’s Day.
At least you don’t have to worry about running out of work anytime soon. And so sorry about your eyes. Really. I know there is nothing worse than eye problems when you have to read for hours ever day. Boo.

Uh. That would be “every.” With a “y.” Obviously, I’ve lost my touch.

Kristin: It is the first time I’ve ever worked on a weekend. And it did suck. However, I’m glad I had a job to come to at all. 30 people were laid off last week. We’re also going to have to work a 40-hour week for the same pay as our current 37 1/2 hours (they’re decreasing our hourly pay while increasing our hours), plus we’re losing our 401(k) matching contributions. Of course, this is all temporary, they hope. And all of it is horrible. But I still have a job. For now, anyway. And I’m actually getting paid for all that overtime, so even though working on a Saturday night is crappy, it all worked out well for me. For now, anyway.

I want to take a nap in that bread pudding, then wake up and eat the rest of it.
Oh, and I hope your eye feels better

JT: It was really amazing. The last time Brendan made us bread pudding, all you could taste was the butter. Which was also delish. But this time it was just custardy and cakey and glazey and mmmmmmm. And oh, the eye thing was pretty annoying; more on that after I go back to the doctor (for the third time) tomorrow.
